The problem
The stakeholder was experienced and had a view: more traffic meant more leads. Keyword negatives were resisted. Brand campaigns were dismissed. Budget kept flowing towards volume and the results stayed mediocre.
The thinking
The number that mattered was sales, not leads, and certainly not traffic. So the question was not whether the stakeholder was right. It was which spend produced sales, and whether the data could show it clearly enough to end the debate.
The work
I didn’t argue the point. I pulled the data. Search term reports, conversion paths and lead quality scores showed a significant share of the budget going to traffic that had never converted and never would. The case for negatives stopped being an opinion and became a line item.
Negatives were implemented and brand campaigns activated.
The result
CPC went up, as expected. Traffic intent sharpened. Lead quality improved by over 45%, and leads converting to sales tripled, for a fraction of the prior investment.
